Impresto! Reading Program

Impresto LogoImpresto! is a comprehensive whole word reading system designed for students in ages 7-12 who have not responded to phonics. Impresto! introduces slow, hesitant readers to the pleasure of reading through an exciting adventure story that has been segmented "chapter-style" into a series of ten books. The story begins at a primer reading level in Book 1 and culminates in Book 10 at a fifth grade level. Segmentation of the story into separate books, or more accurately chapters, leads to a natural sense of accomplishment as the reader finishes each book.

The introduction of high frequency words, vocabulary, syntax, and content are carefully controlled throughout the series. Root words and affixes, word families, and compound words are consistently presented and reinforced. Complex characters and a substantive plot filled with recurring themes help develop essential reading skills such as using textual evidence to determine word meaning and character action, distinguishing between literal and figurative language, drawing conclusions and making predictions. Text-to-speech software promotes phonemic awareness, fluency, inflection triggered by punctuation, and allows even the poorest reader to enjoy the entire series and be rewarded with a paper version of each book to take home and read with his/her family.

The Impresto! kit for schools comes bundled with the reading series in electronic format, text-to-speech software, a pre/post reading evaluation, a manual of reproducible instructional materials for the teacher and a complete set of printed books in comic book style for ten children. Impresto! for families includes the series of books in electronic format, speech-to-text software, a pre/post reading evaluation, one set of printed books, and a booklet of additional fun activities like map drawing and secret codes that will enhance the child's enjoyment and understanding of the story.
